without the formality of ceremonial marriage or adoption have various rights. For instance, the Ohio Legislature in 1978 enacted a Domestic Violence Statute, Section 2919.25 of the Ohio Revised Code, which states: "No person shall knowingly cause or attempt to cause physical harm to a family or household member”. (Emphasis added.) Section (D) of that statute goes on to define protected persons as "a spouse, person living as a spouse, parent, child, or other person related by consanguinity, or affinity, who is residing or has resided with the offender. (Emphasis added.) Further, the Ohio Legislature has repealed all criminal sanctions against adultery, fornication, and cohabitation between consenting Daily World/cpf

adults, has adopted the concept of no-fault divorce, and has abolished the concept of alienation of affection. These indicia, he argued, are representative of the contemporary, actual moral and social standards of Ohio citizens.

The attorney went on to note that the growing trend in the U.S. is to recognize such claims as Rose's, citing the landmark Marvin case as well as several others thoughout the country; he characterized the moralistic public policy arguments of the defendant as "anachronistic".

After consideration of the arguments of both parties, the Cuyahoga County Court overruled Rose's motion to freeze the assets of the defendant, but refused to dismiss the case.

Rose's case has now been settled before coming to trial; however, her situation is far from unique, and

Nestle's Hypocrisy

(HerSay)-The Nestle Corporation, in an apparent effort to counter damage to its image and profits caused by a worldwide boycott of its food products, has launched an ad campaign on milk cartons. Nestle has been the object of a several-year-long boycott as a result of its practice of exporting infant formula to Third World Countries. Babies who use the formula often get sick or die of malnutrition because their mothers lack sanitary conditions in which to prepare the formula. Now Nestle is attempting to bolster its image by associating its name with the very product the company has been accused of depriving Third World babies of: milk. Stores in New York City that sell "Dairylea" milk are offering a free half gallon in exchange for labels from Nabisco's Oreo cookies and Nestle's Quik chocolate powder, in an obvious effort by Nestle to stimulate sales.

Older Women Ignored

(HerSay)—Annette Smail, appointed by Governer Jerry Brown of California as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging, is urging the director of that conference to include on its agenda items of special importance to older women. She says that David Rust, the director of the conference, has just issued a list of ten agenda items,,none of which focus on the special concerns of older women. Smail claims statistics by the Federal Government's own National Institute on Aging indicate that 72 percent of the elderly poor are women, and 60 percent of all widows are likely to be destitute.

The White House Conference on Aging, scheduled to be held in November, is held once every ten years.

the Ohio courts will undoubtedly have to decide the palimony issue in the near future. While the outcome of any such case will depend largely on the predispositions of the court, possibly influenced by .the political conservatism now in vogue, the encouraging trend in the U.S. is toward giving women in Rose's position rights of support and/or compensation.

R2N2 Action (continued from page 3)

phasized that we need to restore abortion to its proper place and initiate discussion of sexual liberation, the tortured relations between parents and children, and the responsibility of a society for the welfare of its members.

The conference ended with members deciding to work against the Human Life Amendment and the Human Life Statute and for the restoration of Medicaid funding for abortions. Network affiliates will organize local activities as part of the May 16 international day of action for abortion rights. though rarely as high as in nontraditional occupations.

These slight gains stem directly from the federal initiatives begun in the 1960's and 1970's to rid the marketplace and education and training programs of sex discrimination. Major federal mandates were passed: to provide equal employment opportunity in hiring; to provide sex-equitable vocational education; to ensure equal educational opportunities; to design employment training free of sex stereotyping; and to increase the training and hiring of women by federal contractors. Such mandates are the foundation of a national strategy to eliminate the consequences of sex discrimination. They must be maintained.

Non-enforcement of existing provisions is a serious gap, however, and jeopardizes the credibility of such mandates with employers, educators, CETA directors, federal contractors, and women. Where such provisions have been enforced, a positive impact has been felt and can be documented. Yet to turn around entrenched attitudes and established cultural stereotypes is not a short-term process. Systematic follow-through to monitor and enforce the law is a continuing need. It is a slow and arduous process, but the payoff in economic terms is worth the price.

Wider Opportunities for Women, Inc. is an independent, non-profit organization which has been working to expand employment opportunities for ⚫ women since 1965. 1511 K Street, N.W., Suite 345, Washington, D.C. 20005. (202) 638-3143.
